Unlined, only two keys remaining. Lacking in tension. A quantity of dirt and debris behind bottom stretcher. The canvas is slightly undulating due to lack of tension. Some stable cracking and slight distortions associated with the stretcher bars, most visibly at top and right. Further minor brittle age craquelure throughout, stable. One tiny area of lifting/cracking and a tiny loss unrestored above the signature, likely from a blow from the reverse. Possibly a little thinning of the delicate dark passages such as the dark horse. Retouched drying cracks in the huntsmen's coats. Ingrained dirt and old varnish noticable in the sky. Slightly yellowed old varnish, and light surface dirt.
b) On the Scent
This picture is signed, too (see images). Unlined, lacking in tension, three keys missing. Very slight undulations to the canvas. Cracking and slight distortions associated with the stretcher bars, plus further slightly raised but stable cracks across the top left corner. Minor brittle age craquelure very slightly raised in places, but stable. Slight wrinkling associated with drying issues in places in the grass. Minor rubbing and tiny losses at the edges from contact with the frame rebate. One minor circular damage in the sky. possibly a little thinning of the paint in the dark, delicate layers. Dirt and old varnish ingrained, visible in the sky. Yellowed old varnish, light surface dirt.

Small distortion and associated cracking top left corner. Broad and finescale brittle age and impack cracks throughout - visible. Very slightly raised but all stable with the exception of a fresher crack in the top right corner. Prominent stretcher bar cracks. One or more campaign of restoration, including broad repainting in the sky - visible as a darker blue and white in passages, to the trees (see uv images) and in places in the dark blacks of the hounds and the boot of the huntsman on the grey. A few scattered minor restored losses. Some abrasion to the paint layers. One partially retouched damage behind the shoulder of the grey. A thick old discoloured varnish, and older ingrained dirt and varnish. Light surface dirt.

Somewhat pressed in the lining process. Finescale brittle age craquelure throughout, flat and stable. Numerous scattered losses, most crudely filled and retouched, including a network around the horse. There is a very degraded old varnish layer, which is yellowed, darkened and crizzled scattering the light and making it difficult to see the extent of the losses and other overpaint. There has been some abrasion to delicate paint layers, some of which is likely reinforced with overpaint. Uneven surface gloss, onld ingrained dirt and varnish, light surface dirt and debris.

Provenance: Frost & Reed Limited Bonhams, Anonymous Sale, Knightsbridge, June 21 2000, lot 69 Lined, one key missing, good tension if a little stiff. A little pressed from the lining process. One dent with associated cracking and minor loss of paint and ground in the trees mid left edge. Finescale brittle age craquelure throughout, not elevated and all secure. A few scattered minor losses of paint and ground, restored, including one larger 2cm loss in the sky.
There has been widespread abrasion in the sky and areas of the grass (particularly to the left of the horses), which has been suppressed but at least one campaign of fairly extensive but careful and not discoloured overpaint, applied in long brushstrokes (see ultraviolet images). The painting has been partially cleaned in the past, with an old varnish left on over the horses, in the fence at the right and in passages of the foreground. Attempts have been made to partially remove this in the small dark pony (now visible as slightly milky circles). There are only scattered, relatively minor retouchings to the horses to losses and marks.
The upper varnish layer is good and even. Light surface dirt and a couple of tiny scuffs and scratches.

Otto Kirberg (1850-1926) German The Spinning Wheel Signed, oil on panel, 28.5cm by 23cm Minor old knocks and damages to the reverse of the panel mostly at the edges. The panel is flat and framed with nails cross-grain. There is a fillet of wood down one side - which is just visible from the face - but it is not clear if this is glued onto the original panel. There is a network of brittle age and drying cracks in line with the wood grain throughout, some fairly open. There has been a campaign of retouching to suppress the worst of these cracks, particularly in the darker passages. See images, including UV photographs. Most of the retouching is in the lower half of the painting, including the shadow to the top of the arm/shoulder, below and through the hand, in the white cloth, in the red cloth and spinning wheel, in the background bottom and lower right. All cracks are flat and stable. A few scattered minor old losses, and a few further minor areas of overpaint. There are also a few matt spots and a slightly uneven surface gloss, where the retouchings appear matte. The varnish is not appreciably yellowed, but there are remnants of an older varnish largely at the edges/background where it has been partially cleaned in the past. A few tiny further touches of overpaint in the flesh. A layer of surface dirt and debris. Overall dimensions (including frame, and depth): 40cm by 35.5cm by 4cm

Circle of George Richmond RA (1809-1896) Portrait of Edward George Percy Littleton (Later 3rd Baron Hatherton), head and shoulders, in a feigned oval With indistinctly inscribed note affixed to reverse "EGP Littleton (1848) age 6 years, afterwards 3rd Lord Hatherton", oil on canvas, 41.5cm by 34cm Unlined, six keys missing, slightly lacking in tension. Old patch to pucture/tear to bottom centre of canvas, visible as a lump at the face of the painting with a large area of brushy overpaint surrounding it. Slipped slightly in frame, top edge of canvas visible. Brittle age craquelure in passages throughout, not elevated and all appears secure - but most noticable in pale forehead. A few areas of drying cracks, mostly to the hair and shoulder, some opened slightly (see images). There has been some abrasion to the delicate thin paint layers, particularly in the hair and half tones of the face around the left eye and in the neck. Possibly a little thinning to the blue background and the faux oval. There is a line of thick blue overpaint to cover rubbing and traces of gold from where it was previously framed as an oval. Scattered fruther minor losses and rubbing in areas, and scattered old minor touches of overpaint. Old ingrained dirt and varnish, possibly slightly yelowed upper varnish. White scuffs to varnish middle left side, minor surface accretions and dirt/splashes. A few minor scratches to varnish at top, and rubbing at edges.

Provenance: Harper Fine Paintings, Poynton, 1998 Mounted on a paper support. Low-level undulations across the sheet (see images in raking light). No tears or creases. Brown adhesive bottom left corner, and some slight discolouration in places including a brown square top left corner perhaps associated with adhesive where it is attached to the support. Feint greenish line along the bottom edge. A few feint brown spots and some slight oxidisation of the paper.

Two retouched scratches in the sky mid left, the larger one approx 2.5inches long. There is a line of lighter paint along the top edge. Possibly some slight fading/muting of colours as the green foliage is fairly blueish. Otherwise good condition.
